Night Forest by Coyote Oldman: Album cover art for Native American Flute music

Album Review: Night Forest
Coyote Odman

Reviewed by Liam Hawthorne

Coyote Oldman’s Night Forest is an immersive journey into the depths of nature and the subconscious, blending traditional Native American flute with ambient soundscapes to create a meditative, otherworldly experience. Released in 1986, the album reflects Coyote Oldman’s signature style of merging ancient traditions with modern techniques, resulting in a sound that is both timeless and contemporary.

The album opens with “Night Forest,” a hauntingly beautiful piece where the flute’s plaintive tones drift over a background of soft, shimmering textures. This track sets the tone for the album, inviting listeners to step into a nocturnal world where every sound feels alive and significant.

While much of Coyote Oldman's music expertly weaves traditional Native American flute melodies with electronic processing and natural sound effects, Night Forest focuses on solo Native American flute. Tracks like “Fox Story” and “Animal Songs” layer the flute’s ethereal voice with subtle echoes and reverb, creating a sense of vast, sacred space.

One of the standout tracks, “Woodland Flutes,” captures the mysterious essence of the album. The interplay between the crisp, euphonious flute and the ambient undertones evokes the feeling of walking through a dense forest under starlight, where every shadow seems to hold a secret.

The pacing of the album is deliberate, encouraging introspection and stillness. Tracks like “Seeking a Friend” unfold slowly, allowing the listener to savor each note and its resonance. This approach reflects the duo’s understanding of the Native American flute not just as an instrument, but as a voice that connects the human spirit to the natural world.

Night Forest is more than an album; it’s an experience. It’s perfect for moments of reflection, meditation, or simply escaping the noise of modern life. While not as ambient as later releases, it is a landmark in the Coyote Oldman journey.  One that needs to be appreciated for its significance and its beauty.

Rating: 4.5/5

Coyote Oldman’s Night Forest is a masterful exploration of sound and spirit, offering a profound listening experience that lingers long after the final note fades. It’s a must-listen for fans of ambient and Native American flute music alike, as well as anyone seeking a deeper connection to the mysteries of the natural world.
