Album Review: Standing Free
Joe Yeatman

Reviewed by Liam Hawthorne

Joe Yeatman’s Standing Free is an inspiring testament to the power of the Native American flute to evoke emotion and connection. With its intricate melodies and thoughtful arrangements, the album invites listeners on a journey of introspection and liberation. Uniting tracks originally released as singles, Standing Free  solidifies Yeatman’s place as a master of the craft, blending traditional influences with his unique creative voice.

The album’s opening track, “White Owl,” is a tribute song for the late Ken Green.  It is a deeply mournful lament featuring long tones and subtle chanting. Yeatman’s playing is precise yet deeply expressive, allowing the listener to feel every nuance of the melody. As the track progresses, subtle layers of percussion and ambient textures enhance the theme of personal and spiritual liberation.

The second track, “Astral Myst” is a standout track that demonstrates Yeatman’s ability to craft vivid sonic landscapes. The flute’s flowing melodies are complemented by a rhythmic undercurrent, creating a sense of movement and discovery. It feels like walking (or floating) along a forest trail, each note leading to a new vista.

Yeatman’s versatility shines throughout the album. Tracks like “Habu Sake” delve into a more meditative space, with simple deliberate phrasing and sparce accompanyment by bamboo windchimes. In contrast, “Tread Lightly” is vibrant and rhythmic, with the very sounds of the jungle as accompanyment.

The album closes with “The First Heartsong”, also the last chapter of the narrative album A Flute Story.  The gentle flute melody, paired with soft harmonic undertones, creates a sense of closure and renewal, leaving the listener with a profound sense of calm.

Rating: 4.5/5

Standing Free is a beautifully crafted album that showcases Joe Yeatman’s talent and passion for the Native American flute. It’s a celebration of freedom, connection, and the transformative power of music. Whether you’re a longtime fan of flute music or new to the genre, this album is a must-listen, offering an experience that resonates deeply with the heart and spirit.
